Signs You Need a New Air Conditioning Unit

Signs You Need a New Air Conditioning Unit

Now is the time to get your air conditioning unit checked out. Spring is here – and while many people are enjoying the outdoors, summer is right around the corner. And while many of us embrace the notion of being outside and working on our tan, it can be disappointing when you go home after a long day in the sun and discover your air conditioning unit isn’t working.

To ensure that you jump on your AC issue before it turns into a problem, we’ve created a list of tell-tale signs which reveal whether or not your air conditioning is on its way out.

Signs You Need a New Air Conditioning Unit

  1. If you are noticing a lack of cool air or limited air flow, your AC unit may be on its way out. While an obvious sign, many people may try to ignore it for as long as possible. This could be a simple fix if you catch it early enough, but if you postpone doing something about your air conditioning unit, you may inadvertently make things worse. Keep in mind, an AC unit should last anywhere from 12 to 15 years. You may also want to check and see if it’s still under warranty so you can avoid additional costs.

  2. If you hear strange sounds coming from your air conditioning unit, check it out! Your AC is supposed to run quietly – so if it is making noises such as banging, grinding, squeaking or the like, get it checked out by an HVAC technician immediately!

  3. If your energy bills are getting higher and higher, this may be because of your AC unit. While there could be a number of things causing your high energy bill, it is in your best interest to have an experienced HVAC tech check out your AC unit. It could be that your air conditioning may be working harder in order to keep you cooler. Again, it could be a simple fix to your AC unit, or it may require purchasing a whole new system altogether.

  4. If your AC unit is leaking or has moisture around it, get your air conditioning checked out! An optimally functioning AC unit can handle the moisture it puts out without any issue. However, if you notice that your air conditioning unit is leaking or has moisture buildup around it, your HVAC unit may be leaking refrigerant. This is dangerous as it poses a health risk to you and your family. Additionally, if you don’t handle it quickly, you are providing a place for mold to form and grow.

  5. If you air conditioning is producing foul smells, call your HVAC technician right away. As with most things, if there is a funky smell coming from it, it’s usually a sign that something is wrong. If your AC unit smells like it’s burning or has a smoky smell to it, call your HVAC guy right away!

In conclusion, keep an eye on your air conditioning unit and watch out for these signs. Also, be sure to look for a reputable licensed HVAC technician near you and have their number within reach should something go wrong. There is nothing quite like spending a few days in a Missouri summer without an air conditioning system!
